 The Importance of Names in Frankenstein and the Handmaid’s Tale Essay

Names certainly are a very important thing that most folks are given soon after birth. A name is definitely " the term or phrases that a person, thing or place is known by” (Cambridge Online Book (2011), Recovered November 6th 2012). Names are given to recognize an individual in replace of calling somebody " it”, a term used to refer to something lifeless or without a name. A name shows that someone really loves us enough to name us; to think about it with care and affection. Brands surrounding mcdougal have a great influence also and the primary character in Frankenstein shares the penname of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley's husband. Inside the Handmaid's Experience, Margaret Atwood uses the influence of feminism to create the names with the majority of women characters. This relates to how women will be portrayed in Frankenstein and how their titles represent all their personalities.

The names of the male character types in the two novels represent the Even victorian and Modern Eras correspondingly. The main character of Frankenstein is Victor. Victor originates from the word ‘victory', which means " an engagement ending in such triumph” (Online Book (2012), Retrieved November 6th 2012). In the novel, Victor lives up to his name by being hubristic, especially when this individual starts resulting in the monster: " …I was thus employed, heart and soul, in a single pursuit. ” The action-word " engaged” has associations of marriage and a life-long tie up to a person or object, but we know that Victor disowns the beast. The subjective " heart and soul” link to being human and suggest that Victor expects the creature to become human, just like himself. It is also possible that Victor is trying to prove to Walton that, at this point, he is continue to completely man, and not a mad person obsessed with aiming to " give animation upon lifeless matter”. Hubris is usually when a person has extreme pride or perhaps self-confidence. They can also be viewed as arrogant; and hubris is always followed by treatment, which is Victor's death plus the many deaths his relatives encounter....
